Steps in the Composite Filling Process

The composite filling process involves the following:
Thorough dental cleaning and exam – Before any work can be done on your teeth, they must be thoroughly cleaned and examined. After the teeth are cleaned, your dentist will be able to see the extent of the damage caused by the cavity. It will also provide a clean surface to which the composite resin can adhere.
Remove any debris near the open cavity – Your dentist will also work to remove any debris or damaged pieces of the tooth that would prevent the cavity from sealing properly. Your dentist may take an X-ray that will allow them to see any hidden damage.
Drill away any damage around the cavity – In addition to removing any surface damage to the tooth, the dentist will also use a drill to remove any damaged tissue inside the tooth. Removing the decayed portions of the tooth prevents the damage from spreading. The composite resin works to seal the tooth and prevent further damage.
Prepare the composite resin—Once the tooth is ready, your dentist will prepare the composite resin filling material. It will become malleable so that the dentist can shape it to resemble the top or crown of the damaged tooth. Proper preparation ensures the filling will successfully bond to the tooth and repair the damage.

Apply the composite resin filling to the cavity—The dentist will begin to fill in the hole left by the cavity, filling any nooks and crannies caused by the decay. The goal is to recreate the surface of the damaged tooth so that it is as close as possible to what it was before the damage. This is important if the top of the tooth is affected. The teeth on the bottom and top need to fit together naturally so they aren’t damaged in any way.
The curing process—In order for the composite resin filling to harden, it must be cured using a blue light. The resin is applied in layers and cured after each step, ensuring it is as hard as the tooth that surrounds and supports it.
