Adjusting to Life with Dentures: What to Know

Dentures are affordable and effective in replacing one, several, or all lost teeth. And unlike dentures of yesteryears, modern dentures are more life-looking and comfortable than ever. But since dentures are a transition from natural teeth, they require some adjustment.

Brookside Smiles in Redlands, California, has helped many patients restore teeth with dentures, and we’re committed to ensuring your teeth replacements not only replace your teeth but remain comfortable.

Here are a few tips from Dr. Jennifer Nation to help you adjust to your dentures.

  • Patience: Some patients take a few days to adjust to their new teeth, while others take a little longer to get comfortable with their new restoration — this is normal. You may feel as if your mouth is full, but this will pass. Within 30 days, most denture wearers get used to their new teeth and barely notice their presence
  • Start with soft foods: In the first days of treatment, stick to soft foods to make chewing easier and more comfortable. Gradually transit to harder foods as you get used to your dentures
  • Practice makes perfect: Speaking and talking may feel challenging during your early days with dentures. But like most things in life, these activities will improve with practice. Read books, newspapers, or any text that allows you to articulate different sounds. With time, your muscles and tongue will adjust, and your speech will become more natural
  • Wear your dentures daily: Dentures may initially feel uncomfortable, and your natural reaction is to remove them during the day. Unless you develop significant oral pain or mouth sores, wear your dentures as directed by Dr. Nation to speed up the progress
  • Follow guidelines: Our dental team will give you instructions on how to care for your teeth and dentures. Generally, we will ask you to remove your dentures at night to allow your gums to rest. During this time, thoroughly clean your dentures using a brush and non-abrasive denture cleaner. Additionally, brush your remaining teeth, gums, and tongue to eliminate disease-causing bacteria
